Everything we learned building community infrastructure from scratch. Written at 3am after failures. Refined through iteration. Tested by people who had never done this before.

Part I: Assessing Your Community's Needs
Start With Listening, Not Building

Rich Hickey teaches: complexity is accidental, simplicity is essential. Your community has ONE essential need buried under many surface problems.
Look for:
- What do multiple people mention independently?
- What causes stress even when people have resources?
- What isolates people from each other?
- What extracts value without giving back?
Common patterns we've seen:
- Food: "I want to eat well but can't afford it" → CSA/Garden cooperative
- Data: "I don't trust where my information goes" → Local datacenter
- Skills: "I want to learn but can't find teachers" → Skill-sharing network

The test: Can you state the need in one sentence a child would understand?
If not, keep simplifying.

- Industrial/commercial zoning (residential won't work)
- Previous uses: warehouses, light manufacturing, retail with backrooms
- Cheap rent districts (near railroads, light industrial areas)
- 3-phase power already installed (check with landlord)
- Basic HVAC (even if old, it's upgradeable)
Negotiation tips:
- Month-to-month first 6 months (prove the concept)
- Offer to improve space in exchange for lower rent
